No managers goal is to hire a problem employee who will give him or her a headache. Like the coaches on The Voice, bosses hire talent to win. So if youre struggling with your boss, or if youre in a new job and its not going so well, go back and ask your manager what she saw in you that convinced her to bring you on the team. Then do that with all your might. Lesson 2. The Competition Doesnt End With the Job OfferThink about if you played a sport and had to train with your fiercest rival. How uncomfortable would that be? On The Voice, thats exactly what the singers do. They train with each other, the coach, and often a guest mentor, knowing that when they compete in the ring, only one of them will be victorious. In the same way, sure, you got the job. But the competition doesnt stop there. I like to say you first compete for the job. Then you compete in the job. The way to get things done is to stimulate competition, steel magnate Charles M. Schwab once said. He did so by letting the night shift know how much steel the day shift had produced. Competition ensued. For you, the same is true in the workplace. Co nsider that for stock options, plum assignments, promotions, title changes, and every dollar allotted for salary increases or bonuses, youre competing with the colleagues around you. It may not be a public contest, but the idea is the same.Much like the singers on The Voice, you continually have to prove youre better than the others to get to the next level in compensation, responsibility, title, or reporting line. Consider what it is youre competing for, and focus your performance on how youre going to win the title. Lesson 3. Youre Good Someone Else May be BetterTheres always anguish when a coach has to choose between two great performers. One stays one goes. But if the coach wants to win, he or she has to be brutal in making selections. Which singer best fits the strategy? Who has the best chance among the overall competition? Like I said- brutal. Theres no room for keeping someone because he or she is nice or seems like a great person. The individual has to help the team win. Of ten, the difference between the one who stays and the one who goes is imperceptible. He or she is simply be a better fit for the coachs strategy. Managers do this all the time. As an employee, you may be good at what you do. But someone else may have a slight edge- just barely perceptible- that puts the W in his or her column for that raise or promotion. However, you can mucksmuschenstill benefit when things dont turn out in your favor. The coaches on The Voice help the deselected singers understand what drove the decision. Likewise, a good manager will help you understand why you win (something we often overlook asking, by the way) and why you dont. So whatever happens, be sure to get the feedback you need to continue improving. After all, a number of singers are on the program this year who had failed in earlier attempts. Theres something to be said for working at it. For as hard as you work in the competition that is your career, thankfully, theres one big difference that doesnt apply to you You dont have to have your performance judged by millions of TV viewers. Do not wait a m onth after a bad incident to broach the subject with your colleague. If the issue is rather small, perhaps it can wait until your weekly one-on-one. However, if the incident was more severe, address it as soon as possible. Just make sure you have taken enough time to properly prepare so you can provide solid, actionable feedback. The same goes for positive reinforcement praise your colleagues work in a timely manner.Pick the right placeIdentify the best place and time to discuss the matter with your colleague. It’s a hard fact to accept, but your friends and coworkers lie to you regularly. The real challenge lies in how you respond once you catch someone in the act.“I’m not upset that you lied to me, I’m upset that from now on I can’t believe you.”  Ã¢€" Friedrich NietzscheEven though most people lie a lot- roughly two to three times during a ten-minute conversation, studies show- you don’t catch them nearly as often as you might think. Researchers from the University of California analyzed the results of 253 studies and found that we only spot about half the lies we’re told (53% to be exact). In other words, we’re about as likely to identify a lie as we are to win a coin toss.The scary thing is that people who are trained in detecting deception - judges, customs agents, law enforcement officers, and even CIA agents - don’t fare much better. They can only spot a lie about 60% of the time.When you do catch someone lying to you, it’s usually a real whopper. These are t he kinds of lies that are so insulting to be the recipient that it’s hard to think straight. In these moments, you want to keep the conversation constructive, without letting the liar off the hook, which is a difficult thing to pull off.And what about the times when you have a nagging sense that you’re being lied to but aren’t certain and don’t want to come across as paranoid or accusatory? While too much skepticism is never healthy, a small dose can be a very good thing, especially since we’re so poor at recognizing lies.The question always becomes, what do you do with a lie? If you think someone is lying to you, do you call them on it? Do you tell someone else? Or do you just go along to get along?There are actually several things you can do, and the right one, or the right combination, depends on the situation.First, make certain you understand the rulesBefore you decide what course of action to take, check the employee handbook and consider the recent history of simila r situations. If you’re going to call someone out, you need to know what you’re getting yourself and the liar into.Know the severity of the consequences for lying, and make certain you follow proper protocol for addressing it, or the entire thing could backfire on you.Option #1: Do nothingNobody likes being lied to, and the natural reaction is to call the liar out, but that’s not always the smartest thing to do, especially at work. Before you do anything, ask yourself, ‘What’s at stake besides my ego?’ Carefully weigh the pros and cons before you take action.Consider who, if anyone, should know about the lie and the implications it has for the company. Sometimes, the animosity you avoid by staying silent is worth more than the satisfaction you receive from speaking out. Other times, the lie is serious enough that people have to know.Option #2: Deflect with humorSome lies are too big to ignore completely, yet too small to make a big deal out of. When this happens, you can always make a joke of it. Playful comments that acknowledge the lie will usually do the trick. Whether it’s “Hey, I think I just saw your nose grow a little bit” or “I need to get my prescription checked.When I looked at the scorecard, it said you shot 112,” this strategy gives the liar a chance to admit their slip-up without fear of reprisal. The key to making this tactic work is to give the impression that the other person was kidding around or intentionally exaggerating and never expected to be believed.Option #3: Play dumbAnother way to let someone save face - and this is particularly appropriate for group settings - is to play dumb. Pretend you suddenly suffered a memory lapse or are confused about the facts. Ask lots of follow-up questions.The more details you request, the more likely it is that the truth will come out. Drawing it out gives the liar a chance to admit that they “misspoke” and correct themselves without being called a liar.Option #4: Call them o n itIn situations where doing nothing isn’t a good option, you can always call the liar out. You just need to think carefully about the best way to do this, and impulsively bashing them is never a smart move. You may choose to have a conversation with the liar in private or with others whom the lie affects.In either case, it’s important you have evidence that backs up your claim, or you very well may be called a liar yourself. Just make certain you are honest and direct with the person who lied. Don’t go to others with the lie when you know it’s better handled privately between you and the liar.There are many times when reporting a lie is the right thing to do, both ethically and practically. Sometimes, not reporting a lie can cost you your job. However, there are a few things you need to think about before you take that step. First, question your motives.Are you thinking of telling someone about the lie out of concern that either another employee or the company could be har med, or are you just mad? If it’s the latter, you run the risk of making yourself look petty; if it’s the former, stick to the facts. Don’t offer any hypotheses about why the person may be lying because that’s just supposition on your part. Stick to what the person said, what the truth is, and any proof you have collected.Not optional: Protect yourselfWhether you decide to call a lie or to let it go, once you know you’re dealing with a liar, it’s critical to take steps to protect yourself. One way to do that is to have a witness attest to what the liar said. Failing this, interact with the liar via email or text, both of which create a written record. Though if you’re dealing with a particularly savvy liar, they’re not going to commit to anything in writing.In that case, document the conversation yourself: who, what, when, where, etc., and cap it off by sending your lying colleague an e-mail summarizing the conversation. That’s not as good as having proof in the ot her person’s words, but at least you’ll be able to make the argument that your colleague had the opportunity to correct you.Bringing it all togetherSome people tell infrequent lies to make themselves look good or to protect themselves. Others are pros. They’ve been doing it their whole careers, they’re good at it, and they’ve learned how to avoid getting caught. That’s why there’s no single solution that works in every situation. An iVillage survey found that of 1,500 women polled online, 89 percent defined career success as the “flexibility to balance life and work.” Here are six practical tips to help you improve your work-life balance.Clean out your inbox before work.The more productive you are at work, the easier it will be to leave the office at a decent hour and enjoy some quality time with your friends and family. Use your smartphone to eliminate spam and organize your inbox of work emails before you get to the office. Whether you do this while waiting in line for your morning coffee or sitting on the train, you can clear out a lot of unnecessary emails and start setting your game plan for the day before you sit down at your desk.Track your time online.Does time seem to fly by but your to-d o list doesn’t get any shorter? There are a number of free apps such as Izepto and Toggl you can download to your smart device or PC to track your activities and identify where you’re losing focus. Track your activities for at least one week before you decide how to alter your workflow.Prioritize your activities and set expectations. Consider which activities are most important to you. This could include getting home in time to eat dinner with your loved ones or tuck your children into bed, or using your lunch hour to work out at a local gym. Identify the time frame you need to be ‘off the grid’ and communicate these expectations to your team. For instance, you may make yourself unavailable from 6:00-8:00 p.m. every evening, but will jump back online and respond to urgent requests before the next morning.Delegate the rubber balls.Consider each priority in your life to be a ball that you’re juggling; some of these balls are made of glass, and some are rubber. When you’re juggling too many priorities, chances are that you’ll end up dropping one along the way. The key is to determine which balls will shatter if they are dropped, and which will bounce back. Consider delegating some of the “rubber” balls to others. Even if a mistake is made, you know it’s something that can be recovered from.Negotiate flexibility.Between conferencing software like Skype and iMeet, and document-sharing services like iCloud and Dropbox, the ability to work and perform well outside of the workplace is easier than ever before. Social media and millennials have become synonymous in recent years, though Gen Z’ers actually make up most of the users.A new study published by Schwab’s 2019 Modern Wealth survey reports  that social media causes half of the Millenials to spend money that they don’t have, which maybe feeds into the 25% of users that said too many ads is why they would delete their Facebook accounts.The most cited reasons for giving Facebook up revolved around security concerns. More than 65% of respondents reported deleting Facebook because they didn’t want the site having their personal information.  Sixty percent of respondents said they deleted the app, due to general concerns about their privacy.  The remaining factors mentioned mostly had to do with adverse social elements. Fifty-eight percent cited “too much unnecessary drama,” 43% cited “too many political arguments,” and 31% said they kept comparing their lives to others.  What is Facebook worth to you?The average American said they wouldn’t permanently delete Facebook for anything less than $1,609, though this figure varied depending on gender and generation.  For men, the number settled around $1,983, while women reported a median amount of $2,074. Baby Boomers were both found to use Facebook less frequently and be less likely to give it up. Baby Boomers and Generation X both required more money to consider getting rid of their  Facebook forever than Millenials  Is it worth it?Two in three respondents said they’re hesitant to give up Facebook because it helps them stay in touch with friends and family. More specifically, Millenials reported relying on Facebook for news. Only 34% of users said they kept their Facebook simply for the service itself.  This makes sense in consideration to all the criticism its interface has received recently.Whatever you might say in defense of Facebook, the fac t of the matter is 0% of users surveyed that deleted the app, reported any negative side effects after doing so. In fact, 41% said that they were slightly happier after leaving Facebook, and 46% said that they were significantly happier.  Forty-four percent of respondents said that deleting Facebook improved their relationship with their significant  other.  Fifty-four percent said that they read more when they deleted the app and nearly 47% said that deleting Facebook made them exercise more.

How to make a decision you won't regret, according to science How to make a decision you won't regret, according to science One of the things that I learned in researching and writing  Farsighted  is that the predictive phase of a decision is always, on some level, a narrative art. The future is unpredictable, particularly when we’re dealing with complex choices. Because we can never fully predict the outcomes of our choices, we have to tell stories- crucially, multiple stories- to imagine different outcomes.This is best exemplified by a technique that was developed in the 1970s called  scenario planning. The idea is that you’re confronting a choice, and you’re trying to imagine what the long-term consequences of that choice are going to be. In building a scenario plan, you actually tell multiple stories, so that you don’t get locked in on one way of interpreting the future.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  One of the techniques that one of the early pioneers of scenario planning, Peter Schwartz, talks about is to tell three stories about the choice you’re confronting: One story where things get better, one story where things get worse, and one story where things get weird. I’ve always loved that last option, because it forces your mind to imagine a set of outcomes the are not coming to you initially. You have to explore the possibility of space, the full-spectrum map of the future in order to come up with that weird outcome.One of my favorite modifications of the scenario planning technique was developed by a psychologist named Gary Klein, and his technique is called a  premortem. Now a premortem, as you might imagine, is the opposite of a postmortem. A postmortem is when a patient is dead, and it’s the job of the forensic scientist to figure out what killed the patient. In a premortem, the patient is going to die, and it’s your job to tell a story about what will ultimately kill the patient.So in decision theory terms, a premortem is the exercise you run right when you’re about to pull the trigger on an important choice. You’ve decided on the path ahead, so you sit the team down, and you tell a story. The story is, in five years, this decision turns out to be catastrophically bad- it’s a complete failure. Tell the story of how that failure happened.And what Klein found is that when you force people to get into that storytelling mode, when you force them to build a narrative account of a future failure, they’re much more creative in seeing potential problems and anticipating ways in which the choice could end up being a disaster.[On the other hand, you could] sit them down and say, “We’re thinking about making this choice. Do you see any flaws with it?” When you ask them that question, they tend to suffer from the usual problems of confirmation bias and overconfidence that people often have. And they say, “No, it looks great. This is a great choice- let’s press play.”But when you run the premortem, they end up see ing flaws that they wouldn’t have otherwise perceived, precisely through that narrative exercise of imagining a catastrophic future.So the next time you’ve reached the point where you’re convinced [about] the choice that you should make, gather your team or family around, and force yourself to run through a premortem.
