In support of the company’s core value of ‘Giving Back’ I volunteered for a day at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and ran my first half marathon for the charity, raising over £800. This helped me realise that I wanted to be part of an organisation which was both intellectually stimulating, but also gave back to society. The Career Zone’s services ranging from Employer Events, Panel Sessions and the Mentor Scheme has undoubtedly helped guide me to a destination I’m very thankful to all the team for helping make my career aspirations a reality. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed my year at Morgan Stanley, I knew I wanted to work in a sector which combined the client-facing experiences I had at PwC with the finance knowledge I’d gained. I took part in the Career Mentor Scheme where my mentor encouraged me to look into Asset Management. I realised that I preferred the ‘buy side’ work which is built on developing long-term client relationships, rather than the ‘sell side’ which is focused more on short-term work. I successfully applied to BlackRock’s summer internship programme in the Client Relationship Management division â€" spanning from departments dealing with Central Banks to Charities. I enjoyed being in the Asset Management division where I observed fund managers who were managing portfolios and actively taking investment decisions. After the internship I was offered a graduate role at BlackRock in the same Client Relationship department â€" a role I find very exciting. I get to work closely with insurance companies yet also follow what’s going on in the rest of the global economy at a macro scale, and the value of constantly innovating fits with my ethos of continuous improvement and development. I got you!   Heres ten photography tips, from a grumpy old professional photographer. 1.  Two eye’s â€" learn to keep both eyes open (you’ll live a longer life). No matter what eye you use to look through the view-finder (I use my right eye) make sure you hold the camera so that you can see past your camera body with your other eye. When you are concentrating on what youre seeing through the lens, your other (open eye) will see the what’s happening outside of the image frame (like a car, animal, tree branch, athlete, etc.) coming at you. 2.  When its ugly in the daytime, it’s usually beautiful at night! Buildings, tree’s, cities, animals, and (yeah) people can use some dark makeup (light). Use a tripod and a long exposure to make your subject go from, boring, flat and old to visually entertaining. Hint: make sure there’s a tad bit of light left in the background to create depth perception. 3.  Turn the camera vertical. I heard you, you just said, duh. I’ll bet 70% of your images are horizontal. It should be 50 / 50. 4.  Shoot straight down! Everything is interesting when you’re looking down on it. If you want your work to stand out, then do something different. Bring a ladder with you or try it with a model. Gravity is the best makeup artist! 5.  Insurance. If you rent your home or apartment you can get renters insurance. It’s inexpensive and your camera gear is covered. Sorry to be negative, but your camera gear is going to be stolen, broken, or lost at some time in your life. Actually, I’m not sorry. I’ve had my gear stolen from my locked up car, office (with alarm) and home! 6.  Don’t shoot alone. Have an assistant (friend, spouse, or hire someone). Have them help carry the gear, set up, answer strangers’ questions, move props, or go back and get the things you forgot at home. They will also help deter the thieves out there that want to pawn your camera gear (see #5 above). 7.  Pay your models (easy for you to say, Mike, but I don’t have any $$$). Okay, how about giving them the images to use in their portfolios or offering to assist them in whatever they might need. Having a model who is being paid changes everything: communication improves, they show up on time and they don’t complain. I’m not talking about paying them big bucks either, $30-$40 will probably get you some great portfolio images. 8.  F/8 and be there (It’s an old photo saying). Have your camera with you set at f/8 and your shutter speed set at auto all the time. Even with auto-focus, youre going to need some depth of field for quick grab shots. F/8 is the goldilocks of f/stops. Not too little and not too much…just right for a grab shot! 9.  Never use f/8Wait, What! You just said f/8 and be there. That’s for a grab shot (when there’s no time to look at your setting). F/8 is safe, but boring. Too much is in focus or not enough. Selective focus brings the viewer right to where you want them to look. Which is why lens makers sell lens that open up to f/1.2, and photographers pay twice the price just for that extra f/stop opening. If you want your viewer to see everything, (the flowers, grass and the mountains) then set it at f/16 or f/22. 10. Quit looking for photography tipsin fact quit reading this! Waiting is not a Job Search Strategy [Updated] - Career Pivot Waiting is not a Strategy Most of you are waiting on a: Job to be posted Recruiter to respond after submitting your resume to a job posting Recruiter to respond after a phone screen Hiring manager after an interview I know, I know you do not want to be a pest or appear to too forward.Well…be a pest. Be a polite pest â€" but be a pest. Pursue what you want. Most importantly…STOP WAITING! Waiting for a Position to be Posted Approximately 80 percent of positions are never posted. So why are you waiting? The days of thinking you are going to get a job by applying online are over for most of us in the 2nd half of life. If you were 20 years younger and looking at junior positions, then maybe applying online might work. The hiring process at many companies is broken. You will want to check out my post 5 Things You Will Never Know About the Hiring Process. Your belief that that the system is fair and equitable is very outdated. Your next job will come through a relationship. Go work your network, work your network and then … work your network some more. Use the Targeted Job Search approach by targeting companies and quit chasing “the job.” Build a list of companies who are capable of hiring you. Use LinkedIn advanced search to find companies that hire people with skills like yours. Approach potential peers and hiring managers, telling them about the problems you solve. Stop waiting for a position to be posted! Waiting is not a job search strategy! Waiting to hear from Someone after Submitting Your Resume Immediately, seek out a company contact if you see a position posted or hear about a job through your network as ahuge percentage of positions are filled through referrals. Do not wait and find a referral first! At the same time, very aggressively, reach out to recruiters or HR professionals in the company to find out who is hiring for the position. Your goal will be to have a discussion with the hiring manager. Waiting is not a job search strategy. The strategy of my fellow Launch Pad Job Club board member, Jim Adcock, was to reach out to recruiters and ask, “I wanted to make sure you received my resume. The sexual nature of my last name sometimes causes my resume to get caught in SPAM filters.” Yes, this strategy works! Waiting for a Response after a Phone Screen with a Recruiter It is very common for recruiters to have up to 60 positions to fill at any one time. Call the recruiter 24 hours after the initial phone screen. Be courteous but persistent. You want to stay on the top of their mind. Be a pest, a polite pest but a pest none the least. The important point here is to call them. Leave them a voicemail if they do not answer. I know, I know you sent them an email and you have not heard back. When people are getting hundreds of emails every day, it just makes sense to call the recruiter and be persistent.If you do not hear back, call them again in a day or so. Do not wait a week to call them back. Be persistent. Waiting is not a job search strategy! Waiting for a Response after an In-Person Interview Make sure and get business cards and contact information from everyone you interview with. Ask for their business cards at the beginning of every interview. If they decide you are not the right candidate during the interview, they may not offer you their business card at the end. Similar to waiting for a response after a phone screen, you want to follow up quickly and be persistent. If you do not hear from them after several weeks, use the Take-Away Closing Technique by calling the hiring manager and leaving them the following message: I am presuming that you are no longer interested in me for the XYZ position. If you have not found your ideal candidate, I would be happy to recommend someone else for the position. Let me know if I can be of any help to you in filling this position. If the hiring manager is still interested in you, they will reach out to you quickly. Earlier in my career, if I wanted someone to call me back, I would leave the following message: Hey Larry, could you call me back about the planned gold shipment. Larry would usually call me back because he wanted to know about this supposed gold shipment…which was fictitious. Be Persistent and Quit Waiting The idea for this blog post came from a presentation by Gary O’Neal, who presented at Launch Pad Job Club. Zetty the HareThis week, I am loving Zetty as I am loving Zeta the hare. Zetty is my new favorite furry character of all time. I'm so happy about this because my brother, who is not that fond of animals, got me Zetty when I was a child.Playing with him can be hard at times. Even when he was a baby, Zetty would wake up in the middle of the night to eat his food. He would come out and run around the house for hours just trying to get all the vitamins and minerals in his diet. Well, Zetty stopped when I learned to be nice to him.One day, I asked him why he didn't want to sleep with me. He explained to me that he wasn't like other hares. He likes to hunt. I tried to explain to him that Zetty and the other hares don't have to hunt. I suggested that he should be playing with other hares instead of chasing them in the middle of the night.Well, he still had a big argument with me over it. After that, I let him play with other hares instead of chasing after them. It worked like a charm.If you 're thinking about getting Zetty as a new mama hare, please do your research first. There are many pet stores that offer this animal.When I wanted to get Zetty a gift, I first went to the pet store and told them what Zetty liked. The 54-year-old former supermodel, who rose to fame as a teenager signed to the Ford agency, is now even more widely known as the mother of Gigi and Bella Hadid (supermodels in their own right) as well as a star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which she left in 2016. But she’s back as the host of her own reality show, Making a Model with Yolanda Hadid, airing on Lifetime Thursdays at 10 p.m. EST. Yolanda Hadid started with next to nothing Born Yolanda van den Herik, Hadid grew up in the Netherlands under difficult circumstances, which influenced how she approached her modeling career, which began when she was only 16. “I was very money-driven,” she said. “I come from a very poor family and my dad died when I was seven, I took on this huge responsibility that I was going to provide for my mother and my brother. It wasn’t that I had the dream of being a model. I never wore makeup. I didn’t even know what Vogue or Cosmo or Elle was because it wasn’t part of my life.” After being signed to Ford Models and spending time in Paris and Milan, Hadid moved into a “model home” in New York Cityâ€"a place where rising models are given a chance to live. “I remember my mom gave me 100 guilders [the former Dutch currency], which was a lot of money for where I came from, and when I exchanged it, I think I ended up with like $55 dollars in my pocket,” she said. New to both the city and the country, she made her way from one meeting to the next using a paper map. “I was hungry to survive and my mom gave me a great set of tools, a great work ethic, and I guess destiny puts you on your path,” Hadid said. “I was meant to be there.” Hadid’s first big purchase was a smart investment As a young, successful model, Hadid was surprisingly careful with her earnings. “I was keeping tally marks for every thousand dollars I was making. And it offers a lesson for young people today. “I didn’t know about luxury items. I never spent any money. I started working for that, paying that off, and that was probably a good move because I sold it many, many years later, and made a lot of money off it. They had three kids who all became models: Gigi, Bella, and son Anwar. They were married from 1994 to 2000. She later married David Foster, who’s worked with singers including Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, in 2011, and their divorce was finalized in 2017. At the time of their split, Hadid’s net worth was reported to be a lofty $45 million to his $30 million, in part coming from her modeling and TV success but also her divorce settlement with Mohamed Hadid. While on Real Housewives, Yolanda reportedly earned a six-figure salary per season. “It’s pretty amazing to look back,” Hadid said, reflecting on how far she’s come from her roots. “I was very motivated.” How modeling has changed in the internet age When Hadid first stepped into modeling, the life was very different. “I would do literally 12 go-sees a day in order to meet clients and advertising agencies in order to break into a new market,” she said. “In today’s world, you can start posting on your social media outlets and you can catch somebody’s eye in Paris while you’re not even in Paris. It’s a very different business today.” Brands and agencies now look closely at models’ online followings, and not just the numbers, but what they have to say. “I think that in my time we didn’t have a voice,” Hadid said. “We were pretty faces who went to work at six in the morning, sunup until sundown, and we really didn’t have a space to express who it was that we were as human beings. I say to my kids, ‘Why has God given you this platform and what are you going to do with it? Because it certainly wasn’t created for you just to post pretty selfies.’” But the shift hasn’t been entirely positive, she adds. “Social media also comes with a whole bag of worms. It’s too new for us to really understand how it affects the youth and the hate and the death threats and opinions from people that don’t really know who they’re talking toâ€"that’s the negative part of it.” The tough lesson she gives her kids Gigi and Bella Hadid may have made it to superstardom, with 37.9 million followers and 16.7 million followers on Instagram, respectively. But Yolanda is intent that it not go to her daughters’ heads. “Kids have to know they’re no better than anybody else,” she said. “My Gigi and Bella can be on the covers of magazines, but they’re no better or prettier than anybody else. They’re just normal kids like everybody else. When they started working, I said to the girls, ‘Listen, there’s going to be a million girls that are more beautiful than you are and deserve success as much as you do, so how are you going to set yourself apart?’ “You have to be the hardest-working girl on the job. You have to be kind and polite to everyone, not just to the people who can further your career,” Hadid adds. “Beauty doesn’t last, but the way you make people feel is something they will remember forever.” Why she prefers a simple life down on the farm Hadid splits her time now between an apartment in New York City and a farm in the Netherlands, which she calls a “sanctuary” for her and her family. It’s pretty much the opposite of what viewers saw of her Malibu mansion on Real Housewives. “My happiness is buying a little pony, feeding my cows and my goats, and getting my fresh eggs from my chickens, so that’s really where my joy is,” she said. She’s back to riding horses, a pastime that she passed on to Gigi and Bella. “We’re just hopping around shoveling the shit and getting back to our roots,” she added, laughing. Her one splurge Hadid still claims she isn’t much of a believer in the material life, but in dealing with lyme disease, she has become an ardent consumer of alternative remedies and adheres to a strict organic diet. She admits that she’s dropped quite a lot of coin on vitamins alone, and even administers her own intravenous therapy three days a week. “I’m eager to learn every day and try new things. That’s really a big part of my life and that’s the only place I like to spend money,” she said of her dedication to holistic health. Plus, she appreciates it a lot more than a Chanel handbag.
